Seismic Retrofitting of Mid-Rise Unreinforced Masonry Residential Buildings after the 2010 Kraljevo, Serbia Earthquake: A Case Study

There is a significant building stock of post-WWII low- and mid-rise unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings in Serbia the region (former Yugoslavia). Numerous this typology collapsed due to devastating 1963 Skopje, Yugoslavia earthquake, causing fatalities, injuries, property losses, as well experienced damage few recent earthquakes region, including 2010 Kraljevo, earthquake (MW 5.5) 2020 Petrinja, Croatia (M 6.4). These are three- five-stories high, have clay brick walls, rigid floor slabs, usually with an RC ring beam at each level. This paper presents case study URM which was damaged Kraljevo subsequently retrofitted. A comparison seismic analysis results, capacity/demand ratio displacement/drift values, for original retrofitted according design retrofit codes were followed some neighboring countries several decades Eurocode 8 has been presented. The results show that selected solution satisfied Yugoslav code requirements not adequate 8, primarily significantly higher demand.
